My parents (Mum/Stepdad) are pretty fail
They only let me use the internet for an hour everyday
Lucky my phone has it's own internet ;)
Except that the girl I got it from needs it back :(
My parents also force me to go to bed by 9pm.
I guess it's okay though, since I have school at 7:30am hahahaha -_____-

Does anyone else have parents that enforce 'laws?'

I call it a law because if I don't do as I'm told, I get in big shit, and they don't let me see my girlfriend, who lives about an hour away and who I see once a week -______-

EDIT: No hiptop (phone) = a lot less halo :(
I'm gonna see if I can just get a job somewhere and pay for the internet so I can use it whenever ;)

I would much prefer somewhere that pays more than minimum wage ;)
And also something with minimum food handling..
I've applied at Targets, Kmarts, 7/11's, Blockbusters and game shops

Dr. Phil time:

That's the typical life of a teenager. I ground through that stage in a very turbulent fashion. Best thing to do is to play the waiting game until you have a little more independence i.e. Begin driving (get a license to begin with), finish school, go to uni/tafe/apprenticeship, finish your degree/diploma/apprenticeship, start earning decent cash and finally move out.

My parents were similar to what you describe and ended a lot of "relations" I had with girls at the time. No computer. No xbox. Just study. I used to rage harder than some people after OR2. Yelling, swearing, punching in walls. Just being a rather angry ape that was throwing its own feces into the air claiming itself alpha male. Looking back on it, it's pretty disgraceful behaviour now that I understand why my parents acted that way. Here are some reasons why my parents acted accordingly.

  • XBOX - They thought I spent too much time on it and not enough on study. Their philosophy was: "If you have time to play xbox you can get a job." At the time I was an idiot and outright said no. As stated, I was a gimp.
  • Lady Friends - The Devil. They hated my "friendships" with girls. I even went to the extent of lying to them of my whereabouts. Bad idea. If there is one tip I can give a hormone driven teenager, it's don't do what I stated in the last sentence. It causes more problems than it solves and on top of that their are plenty of fish in the sea.

Gaining independence can be long process but there exists shortcuts which all have corresponding pitfalls. I use "pitfalls" because the younger you opt out, the farther you are from your ideal life style.

There also exists a certain amount of irony. I electively don't play xbox any more because I wish to study. Strange how things come full circle in some rare cases like mine. The greatest message I can impart is this: be a nice, logical thinking, clam, well mannered young man & you'll get laid whilst on the job. That pretty much covers two things, right?

I hope some of this helps. Even if you don't need the advice I thought I'de write this up (procrastinating structural analysis) as my experience which may or may not help anyone.

I'm Kinetics and you're Serpentlord.

Thankyou Kinetics, that was an interesting read.

@ Serpent Lord

Pretty much what used to happen to me. I could never play X-box on weekdays, or use the internet for social reasons. it used to drive me fucking insane.

You could try making a deal with your parents, say that you will do all your homework/study before a certain time, then get to spend time on the X-box as a reward. I don't know if it will work or not, but its worth a try to ask right?

And as for the 9pm thing...seriously that sucks massive balls. I normally go to be at 12 or 1am and get up at 8 every morning for work. You only need about 7 hours sleep to be able to pass through the day...i think.

Thanks Kinetics for the advice and thanks to Aza for his advice too
I might try that deal thing, don't think it will work though, still worth a shot ;)
The faster I get a job, the easier things are gonna get :)

Serpentlord you are only 16. If I could one tip for the future, it would be to limit your halo playing to at MAX one night a week and sometimes on weekends. Give school everything you have, even if you are not that smart, that way you can have no regrets as you did the best you possibly could and don't have to play the 'what could have been' scenario over in your head. You only get one shot. Play a sport/ team sport if you can.

As for women. 98 percent of them are a waste of time until after you are 18 (dating wise that is), of course create friendships with them, but relationships at this point in your life are fairly redundant.

Your parents may seem like dicks but they are just trying to keep you on track and help you create the best possibly scenario for yourself leaving high school. If you have finished school and are earning money and they still controlling you, best that you probably move out.

Get a part time job. It will enable you to slowly save while still living with your parents and lets you pay for certain things YOU want (I really wouldn't worry about paying for the internet, I mean is it really that important at this point in your life?)

As for going to bed at 9. Well I went to bed at 930 pretty much every school night sometimes earlier. Why? Because one, I love my sleep and two, if I didn't go to sleep straight away, it would give me a chance to read a book for a couple of hours and still get 8 hours sleep in. The assortment of knowledge available in books is amazing.

/advice :)

True man
I already get A's in school, I'm in year 12 so I think I'm doing well
I play one hour of Halo every weekday, then on weekends I'm at my girlfriends and I might play a few games with her, her brother is gosu Grim from team gosu
I've been needing a job for quite some time, I need to buy stuff for my girlfriend, need to buy a new guitar and a new amp, need a new skating set-up and various other things
If I get a job, everything should be sweet in about 8 months cause I'll have finished school ;)

Agree, I'm in bed at 9, and mum always says she's enforcing me to only an hour a day. Whenever she does that, I slowly let it slip until 3 weeks later, I can go on whenever. Then she has a spaz two months later. Repeat. I don't use a mobile, but yeah, I feel your pain.

Though my mum is pretty cool and so's my stepdad.

I agree with everything except for school. I'm not going to start an argument, and because you seem to like books like I do (I read 2-3 hours since I was six) and I recommend you read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad". School can go fuck itself, because you never see a rich doctor, lawyer or teacher.

Yeah, find a way to get back at that, but its truth and I can tell you so much more, but it's all explained in books like that etc. Did you know 80% of rich/wealthy americans dropped out or failed school? Yeah, argue back like all the teachers and straight A students do, and they're poor and the straight A students parents are poor and they think they're right. I don't care if you respond unless you read some business books.

Only rule:

If we get capped, I pay.

Other than that I can play whenever I want lol.

As for people saying you shouldn't play Halo while at school: I played Halo all through year 10, 11 and 12, with the Bris LAN being a few days before the HSC and I got into the uni course I wanted pretty easily, so it's just about realising what you want and what you need to do to get there. There is no reason sweating over high school cause uni is way better.

Then again, I was pretty good at picking things up in class and didn't need to study much so I guess it's different for everybody.

I agree with this entirely
I'm passing school easily, I get academic awards for some subjects
I have never failed a subject

Just to the side, I don't want to be wealthy Jagged Cone, I just want to be happy. Money isn't everything, but you can't survive on happiness alone, so all I need is an income I can live off and I'm happy and living
Also, name a rich/wealthy person who isn't greedy

What you put in, is what you get out - in school.

High school is a free ticket around the world, - just a few quotes i like from a few school lectures.

Pretty fun waste of time though ;)

I always used to go to bed at around 10ish in Yr 12 for exactly the same reason.

It depends on what you classify 'rich' as. My girlfriends parents are pharmacists and I would consider them rich, not Mansion rich, but her mum is retiring at 40-something so they must be doing something right. That being said, they have worked hard for their money and have made some smart business investments and have a lot of awesome rental properties.

As for lawyers and doctors? Most of them would be on a wage that would put them at the high end of the average person's wage. Teachers don't make heaps, but its comfortable living, and also no where near as had to become a teacher as it is a doctor or a lawyer. A mate of mine is a teacher and he was pretty much drunk the whole way through Uni.

Makes me regret being so indescisive when I left school, he is fully qualified and I am only just starting to sort my self out now. Listen to your parents, they know whats good for ya. Play Halo for your alloted internet time if thats what you enjoy, but avoid making it a priority if your parents lighten up a bit. There are far better and more memorable things to do with your time.

High school is a piss take. 'ohhhh you have to do well to get into uni or you'll be poor for the rest of your life'

lol I got an OP25 (the WORST you can get. Fact; 0.025% of QLD Yr 12 students in 2007 received this mark) and I strolled into university, did a 3 month course full time and am now doing an undergraduate.

As for bed times, 3.02am, uni at 9 til 12, work from 12.30-5.30pm... ruthless attitude. Btw tell your step dad to get fucked, he aint your real dad anyway

as for work... school pwns working full time trust me
I just wanna let you know... THE BACK OF YO HEAD IS REDIKLOUS
Oh don't be insecure girl... OWN THAT PONYTAIL... WORK THAT UP DO!
