The event that we attended last year (Anaheim) had roughly 90 teams. The total money received from those attending teams would be 19k (again roughly). That is not enough to pay for prize money, let alone Halo's part of the venue and all the staff/equipment. To remedy this MLG could offer lower prize money but it would most likely devalue their brand and may result in fewer teams coming to tournaments. While I think tournaments with lower prize money is better then no tournaments at all I don't think that is a risk/sacrifice MLG is willing to make.
Yes, I understand that money makes the world go around, but at the same time they can't pull a WCG and choose Dead or Alive as their fighting game of choice just because Microsoft gives them a nice cheque unless they want the entire competitive gaming community to laugh at them.

It wouldn't make sense if they actually continued to support Halo.
Considering Halo practically made MLG what it currently is, it does make sense. I know they're a company and they need to make money, but abandoning the entire fan base that built them could also bite them in the ass. If Halo 4 ends up outselling the next CoD MLG could potentially have a tough time bringing Halo back to the circuit if they abandon it.
IMO the MLG settings have played a role in the decline in Halo. All the Forged maps have made watching and playing Halo a chore. I know a map needs to have good gameplay elements, but at the same time no one wants to play/watch grey maps 9/10 games and since every map is symmetrical it's making the gameplay so stale compared to Halo 1/2.
