Hell yeah, I'm having a LAN for it on the weekend at my house on the Central Coast.
I've got a few mates coming over, but if anyone from ACL is interested I may allow a few extras to come along depending on how many people are gonna turn up. PM me if you're interested.

Yeah, they are launching the game in regions.
Asia
Europe
Americas
Blizzard has stated that Australian players should be playing on the America(s) server.
Which goes up 12:01am PDT which they converted to 5:01pm Aus time (Tuesday)

There is no offline play in Diablo 3. Blizzard said they implemented this due to the difficulty of fixing client-side dupes/hacks/bugs. Everything is stored sever-side. (Which, in all honesty is a significantly better option... I mean, with the RMAH and all).
No probs.
// and as for playing on other regions, it won't work. "Global Play" (as in switching between regions, with a region locked serial key) isn't available until the US server is opened anyway. To ensure the servers aren't flooded by every other region, and you know crash the servers like every other online game ever launched. Hah.

Sure, it can be annoying, but these days there's internet everywhere. Online gaming doesn't use much data, as long as you have your client up to date you could just use wireless modem or tether your laptop to your phone and use 3G. Most plans these days come with 1GB or something to use in a month, you're hardly going to use all that data on just Facebook.
Also, having the game online only is the only way possible to make sure the RMAH isn't abused, so I guess it's worth it in the end, I wish WoW had something like that.
My only complaint will be PvP tournaments, I think it should be possible to play PvP on LAN - As far as I know there's no item collecting or anything, it would just use items you've already unlocked.

The PvP tournaments won't be in for ages. Aside from that, blizzard have stated that they don't plan to dual balance the game (PvE and PvP as separate entities) and preference will be on PvE.
Other than that, they said they do not have any plans to support D3 as an e-sport.
Basically, they're aiming for PvE and the larger, casual community.

Yeah, I'm aware of this, however, it's still a nice option to have for people that are interested... I've seen a lot worse games played at video game tournaments, lol.
For anyone looking for an offline version of D3, check out Torchlight on STEAM, they've got a sequel in the works that'll have co-op support as well.
