Last night marked the first event of what looks like many for ACL at the Mana Bar. Running a Halo 3 Free For All tournament in Australia's first ever gaming bar was indeed a memorable event for all 48 competitors involved! That's right, the bar was packed out with gamers and social punters alike keen to get their mits on a game that is due to be replaced in under 2 weeks. Halo 3 proved it's still one of the most popular games out there, with lots of 'ooooohs', 'aaaaahs' thrills and upsets.

There were a few surprise newcomers who impressed in early rounds, proving that the social scene is very much alive and kicking with skill in the Halo world. Most notably were Jonno (sporting an Instinct cap), Louis and his band of merry men who had never heard of ACL. These guys blitzed their early rounds and met up against some familiar ACL faces later on, narrowly missing the next stage or in Louis' case bowing out for RL commitments.

Having 3 machines to play on, we set up 6 person FFAs (2 player split screen) with an 8 minute time limit. The first round map was Guardian, second was Amplified, then the semi-finals and the Grand Final were played on Heretic. The grand final removed the 8 minute time limit and was a more traditional first to 50.

Typically though, the top 12 were all ACL regulars. Beware started immensely strong, going +31 in his first round only to falter slightly later on. NiiG and Jackamo were looking dangerous throughout the competition, while Adz was continually strong. Most interestingly though, three members of a little known (but long established) open team kept chipping away at results. Sex On The Beach members Gebus, Quenslandar and Steak all found a place in the final 6. These guys have been a strong, socially based MLG team for years but continue to impress. Uber flashy gameplay wasn't a must, but a solid BR and clever pushes saw them each through to the finals. These guys should not be underrated in Online R4 this weekend.

At the end of the day, Adz was just too strong, demonstrating his FFA prowess on Heretic and perhaps out to prove that he's still got it. And indeed he has, winning the competition with no immediate or pressing threats.

Thanks to all those that came, and it was lovely to meet all the new faces. The ManaBar wants me to run one of these once a month with fantastic prizes rumoured *hype, hype* so make sure you keep up to date with our facebook pages ;).

Final Results:

1. Adz

7. Beware

Drinking and gaming?

I must've been about 6, 7, 8 or 9 years old when a friend and I were playing an old star wars game, and we couldn't wrap the rope around the big walking things legs. He then told me that his uncle was once drunk and started playing the game, and wrapped the rope around the legs in once go! I was all like "WOH!"

Yeah...

Anyway, good writeup, hope you guys had fun! (f*** being under 18?)

Great write up vanzo. Was definitely a GREAT atmosphere for a tournament like that, especially after people had a few drinks. I will definitely attend future events if they occur. Oh BTW, nice job on running the comp vanzo, without your loud manly voice you might have had a bit of trouble though.

When you don't know who Adz is, you know there is something wrong.

WTF! My school has so many Halo players, its freaky. Jonno went to my school last year, aswell as heaps of other guys there. I had no idea he played or was into MLG and everything.

Good write-up.

inmaniac, they rarely have jobs going there, and when they do they're advertised on the Facebook and Twitter accounts for the Mana Bar. When the Melbourne and Sydney installations open up Vanz you'll have to run tournaments there :D

I'm happy to help out.
Take pics, video, win the event, yell and throw out (literally) drunk kids, etc.

There you go.... I'd say Melbourne is most likely Hooters/Excessum/Schmutt to run things ;)

Sydney: Cavey/iDeal/Pyro at a guess

I'd put my money on EXC355UM. Good guy, trustworthy and is definitely going places in regards to a lot of things. Couldn't recommend him enough.
